Sharing stories across immigrant communities
Help us tell our stories in your language

Share your story

Here’s where we publish your story. If it’s a written story, paste it in below. What should the story be about? It’s simple, and we want it to stay simple so others will read it, enjoy it and share it with others. It should relate in some way to your experiences as an immigrant, as someone new to Chicago and the United States. It should be about something that was difficult to overcome or that made you particularly proud of accomplishing; something that was unique to you but that others can relate to.

Here are a few prompts that might help you decide what story to tell: an experience learning the language, problems with “papers,” keeping the family together, fearing “the law,” connecting with back home, trying to get work, culture shocks, remembering the migration, and identity issues.

Tell one small story rich in detail and you’ve told a story others will remember and pass along.

Publish your story here:

Include a photo that brings out your story. It can be of you, or the setting for your story or even a document.
Your name appears as author or as your story’s byline so people know who you are. [If you do not want your last name known, that is ok. Just let us know that. Please don’t put in a phony name to lead people to believe you’re someone you’re not.]
We are editing the site so if there are changes we make, we want to be able to reach you.
We want to keep track of which communities are part of our story telling exchange.
All our stories are coded by city and country so they appear on the Story Locator map to allow readers to find stories from specific locations in the world.

Age and gender are optional but allow us to refer to you generally as we write about the stories that appear on the site.
